    Optimism is more beat-oriented than Nelson's more ambient solo work, but it never actually rises to any kind of real funkiness; the closest he gets is on "Everyday Is a Better Day," which sounds a bit like an enervated Scritti Politti circa Cupid & Psyche ' Other tracks offer barely comprehensible vocal samples and stiff, unexciting synthesized rhythms.4/

    Dec 31,  · It wasn’t released until , when boxy drum-machine funk such as Everyday Is A Better Day and the Paul Hardcastle-style collage Kut Up In Cartoonsville already sounded a little dated. Remastered and expanded for this handsome reissue, the album’s chief appeal will mainly be among vintage synth-pop connoisseurs and Nelson completists.

    So although Optimism was credited to Orchestra Arcana in the UK, it was credited to Bill Nelson's Orchestra Arcana in the US. Optimism was available on vinyl, cassette and, for the first time in Nelson's career, simultaneously released on the UK CD edition contained 3 bonus tracks that were not replicated on the US release on Enigma the following year. US vinyl copies (on Enigma) came with a sticker that .

Bill Nelson reflected on the album thus; "Whilst these recordings are lo fi in nature, I have always been fond of them.
